Mr. Smith (John Smith)
John Smith hails from a privileged background, and one not without its share of mystery. After public school, and a fairly average performamce academically, he rather failed to excel in fields either mundane or esoteric.
Following brief (and rather disappointing) stints in the army (Royal Engineers) and the city (with one of the smaller private banks) his family eventually pulled some strings and wangled him a sinecure in the depths of the civil service.
He was eventually found by Carter who brought him into the Library and schooled him in the development of his magical potential. With Carter now gone, Mr Smith has at long last come into his own.
